Since the 2002-03 school year, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools has offered a dual-language immersion program. Carrboro Elementary's program is Spanish/English and has two kindergarten classes each year. The Dual Language program at Carrboro Elementary is only open to students that live in the Carrboro Elementary attendance zone. Glenwood Elementary's program is Mandarin Chinese/English and has one kindergarten class. If you are the parent of a rising kindergarten student and are interested in your child becoming fluent in a second language, this may be the program for you.
Dual Language Education
What is Dual Language Immersion? Each dual language class will have 24 students, half of whom are native English speaking, and half of whom are native Chinese or Spanish speaking. Students will spend half of each day with a teacher who teaches in English and the other half with a different teacher who teaches in the target language. Each language will get equal emphasis and both teachers will teach core subjects. Classes will be divided equally between native English speakers and children who are native speakers of the target language. A typical day will see students taught in Chinese/Spanish for half the day and English the other half.
Why Dual Language? Immersed in both languages, students will immediately embark on competency in both languages, ultimately developing bilingual and bi-literate skills at or above expected grade level proficiencies. Dual Language programs are favored for their unique success in enhancing academic performance while establishing a student's ability to be comfortable in two languages.
Who is Eligible? The English/Spanish Dual Language Program at Carrboro Elementary is open only to children districted for Carrboro Elementary School. Glenwood's English/Chinese Dual Language program is open to any rising kindergartner attending Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Transportation will be provided.
